20x 50 cm Watercolour

2024

For a few weeks, I stayed with a friend who lives in the urban parkland of Leeds called Meanwood. Her pretty garden backs straight onto Meanwood Park which was once the estate of a wealthy cloth merchant.

The estate is now a lovely public park with woodland. Through the estate runs Meanwood beck, a stream that has been used by mills for around 800 years. The first mill was established by local monks to mill corn. Later a paper mill was built on the same site after which it became a tannery and then a fellmongery.

It closed in 1994 and was converted into fashionable flats. Some of the mill cottages are still inhabited and the great mansion on the hill is currently unused but has been through many uses over the years including casual apartments and a hospital of some sort.

It is a fascinating corner of Leeds
