I have always been fascinated by maps. The symbols and codes, the longitude and latitude, the aerial view, the recognition of places visited or lived, the grid patterns of cities, the meandering knots of old villages, rivers and coastlines all create interesting patterns and random shapes. I colour and decorate them according to the way I feel about different districts: bright colours for shopping streets and tones for meadows and wilderness.

My new pieces are a departure from recognisable maps and are about the experience of travelling and the feeling of unfamiliar places.

Recently, I visited Turkey starting with two nights in Istanbul and then taking a trip across the Sea of Marmara to discover some other delights of that country. The painting that resulted from that journey was a collage of some of my unforgettable experiences.
