Researchers at Warwick and Westminster universities have revealed that mitochondria communicate using light which is imperceptible to the human eye. Surely, then, we must be able to communicate in the same way.
Do we communicate using light?
The Mitochondrial Connection
Recent studies have uncovered that the thousands of mitochondria found in every cell of our body communicate through light. This light is so subtle that it remains unseen by the human eye. I often wonder if the glow emitted by these cells in others can be sensed by the mitochondria within ourselves.
Could this phenomenon help explain why we sometimes feel that certain individuals radiate energy or seem to possess an aura? Those who have reached a higher level of knowledge, insight, or understanding are often described as 'enlightened.' Some individuals have the ability to 'light up' a room upon entering, while healthy people are said to 'glow with health.' When we are in love, it is often said that we 'carry a light' for another. In Buddhism, it is believed that when an enlightened person passes away, they achieve a rainbow body, and their energy dissolves into the light. My favorite philosopher and poet, Khalil Gibran, beautifully expresses this sentiment: “What is death but to stand in the wind and melt into the sun.”
Why am I discussing this?
As I align my work with my values of JOY, ENERGY, and BELONGING, I find it increasingly important to understand what these sensations are and why they resonate with us. Similar sensations might include EMPATHY and ATTRACTION. I refer to these as *senses* rather than emotions because they are outward-facing, unlike emotions such as sorrow, grief, contentment, hope, and enjoyment, which are more inward-focused.
The theme of my embroidery revolves around 'the Joy of Life.' The initial pieces I created were spontaneous, and people instantly connected with them. I am now embarking on my third collection and want to ensure that these upcoming embroidered panels radiate the same infectious JOY as the very first ones, as JOY should never become trite, tired, or clichéd. If we subtly glow while broadcasting our joy, then my embroidery should reflect that as well.
I transform my embroidery panels into 30 cm square cushions, backed with luxurious cotton velvet and filled with goose down. When you pick up and squeeze one of these creations, I want you to feel everything I experienced while making them.
